EOP Summer Academy

Your Head Start at SUNY Niagara

Begin your college journey with opportunities to learn, connect, and build confidence. SUNY Niagara’s EOP Summer Academy is a three-week residential program that helps incoming students prepare for college coursework, explore campus resources, and build relationships with fellow students, professors, and EOP staff.

The Summer Academy is mandatory for all incoming first-time EOP students. Students transferring into SUNY Niagara EOP from an EOP or HEOP program at another college are exempt.

Prepare for College Learning

Students participate in courses taught by SUNY Niagara professors that introduce academic expectations and strengthen essential skills:

Math

Review basic algebra and build a foundation for college-level mathematics.

English

Develop reading and writing skills through instruction centered on the work students can expect in SUNY Niagara’s English 101 course.

First-Year Experience

Learn about campus departments, the services they provide, and how to access support throughout your college journey.

Build Skills for College and Beyond

Interactive workshops help students develop practical strategies for academic success and personal well-being. Topics include:

  • Note-taking and study strategies
  • Time management
  • Financial literacy
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Career exploration
  • Student life and campus involvement

Through these experiences, students learn how to seek support, manage responsibilities, and become active members of the SUNY Niagara community.

Make Connections and Explore

The Summer Academy includes educational, cultural, and recreational activities that give students opportunities to explore, try new experiences, and build a sense of belonging.

Past trips have included the Maid of the Mist, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, and Darien Lake. Activities and destinations may vary from year to year.

Living on Campus

Students live on campus for the full three weeks of the Summer Academy, including weekends. This residential experience provides opportunities to develop independence, build friendships, and become familiar with campus life before the fall semester begins.

Costs and Transportation

Housing, meals, and program activities are covered by EOP. Students are responsible for arranging transportation to campus for move-in and home following move-out.

We recommend bringing approximately $100 in optional spending money, if possible, for souvenirs or other personal purchases during trips and activities. This is not a program fee or a requirement to participate.

Dates and Next Steps

The Summer Academy is typically held in August. Accepted students receive confirmed dates, move-in and move-out instructions, a packing list, and additional participation details before the program begins.
