Public Speaking

This course introduces students to the principles and practice of effective public speaking. Emphasizing both theory and performance, students will learn to research, organize, outline/write, and deliver a variety of speeches (introduction, informative, persuasive, and special occasion) in a variety of modes (manuscript, memorized, extemporaneous, impromptu) for diverse audiences and contexts (classroom, lecture hall, conference room, theatre, video-recorded, and/or live, online videoconferencing). Through guided practice, peer feedback, and critical analysis of public discourse, students will develop confidence, clarity, and competence as speakers. Topics include audience analysis, speech organization, verbal and nonverbal delivery, listening skills, ethics in communication, and the use of visual aids. Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.

This is a non-credit, workforce development course — a lower-cost way to build practical skills without enrolling in a full degree program. It's a good fit for anyone changing careers, brushing up on skills for a current job, or exploring the subject before committing to a credit-bearing program.

Coursework is delivered online through SUNY Niagara's learning platform and runs the length of the semester, with topics building week to week. Upon successful completion, students receive a Certification of Completion to document their coursework.
