Emergency Medical Technician

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are vital first responders trained to recognize, assess, and manage acute illnesses and severe injuries. They provide critical care on-site and during transport to medical facilities.

EMTs are currently in high demand, with numerous volunteer and paid opportunities available within fire departments and ambulance services.


EMT Course Details

This program offers both Original Certification for new students and Refresher training for current EMTs.

  • Dates: May 21st – August 4th, 2026
  • Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays (6:00 PM – 10:00 PM) + 4 Saturdays (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
  • Format: 25% Hybrid
  • Location: SUNY Niagara, 3111 Saunders Settlement Rd, Sanborn, Room G226
  • Instructor: Michael Shaw – EMT-Paramedic
  • State Exam: August 20th, 2026 (To be scheduled individually at a NYS approved testing site)

Program Cost:

  • Original: $1,095
  • Refresher: $545
  • Note: Students are responsible for textbooks and specialty certification costs (CPR, PALS, ACLS, and ITLS/PHTLS as applicable).

Funding & Reimbursement Opportunities

Affiliated Participants (Firehalls/EMS Agencies)

Participants affiliated with firehalls or qualified EMS agencies are often eligible for NY State DOH tuition reimbursement.

  • SUNY Niagara will temporarily waive the tuition funds expected from the NY State DOH.
  • Requirement for Waiver: Students must pass the class, pass the SUNY Niagara skills exam, and pass the first available NY State certification exam.
  • Liability: If a student becomes ineligible for reimbursement (fails the course/exams or does not complete the program), they will be charged the full course fee per the Workforce Development refund policy.

Important Requirements & Policies

Cancellations: SUNY Niagara reserves the right to cancel classes based on enrollment or unforeseen circumstances.

Registration: Class size is limited. Applicants must meet and satisfy all entrance requirements.

NYS DOH Approval: The schedule is currently pending final NYS DOH approval.
