Teams Etiquette for Students

Teams Etiquette for Students

Professional & Respectful Communication

  • Communicate courteously and professionally; avoid personal attacks, inappropriate language, or intolerance.
  • Use clear, standard English.  Avoid slang and ALL CAPS, which can appear aggressive.
  • Be respectful of diverse viewpoints and maintain a supportive, inclusive tone in all interactions

Online Class Interaction & Conduct

  • Follow course expectations, participate regularly, and engage professionally in discussions.
  • Keep posts focused on course topics; personal or unrelated comments may be removed.
  • Engage respectfully.  Debate is welcome, but maintain acivility and be mindful that tone, humor, or sarcasm may be misunderstood.

Technical & Participation

  • Log in on time and minimize distractions; present yourself as you would in an in‑person class.
  • Use your real name, stay muted unless speaking, and avoid multitasking.
  • Keep chat messages professional and appropriate for a school environment.

Camera & Visual Etiquette

  • Camera use is strongly encouraged and you should follow all instructor guidelines on camera, participation, and discussion expectations.
  • Ensure your camera view, background, and surroundings are appropriate and free from distractions; use background blur or a neutral background when needed.
  • Present yourself as you would in a physical classroom.   Dress appropriately and avoid joining from a bed or other unsuitable locations.

Teams Audio and Recording Notice

If Teams is used in this class it may be recorded for use by enrolled students, including those who are unable to attend live. Students who participate in any session with their camera engaged or utilize a profile image are consenting to have their video or image displayed/recorded. If you are unwilling to consent to have your profile or video image displayed/recorded, be sure to keep your camera off and do not use a profile image. Likewise, students who un-mute during class and participate orally are consenting to have their voices recorded. If you are not willing to consent to have your voice recorded during class, you will need to keep your mute button activated and communicate exclusively using the “chat” feature, which allows students to type questions and comments live.
