Freedom of Information Law (FOIL)

SUNY Niagara will comply fully with the provisions of the New York State Freedom of Information Law of 1974 and will seek, in every way consonant with the public interest, to protect and promote the public’s right access to governmental records. The College considers itself within the definition of “agency” provided in the Freedom of Information Law and hence obligated to comply with the requirements relating thereto.

How to Request a Record

All requests for records must be submitted in writing. Requestors are encouraged to write or email the Records Access Officer reasonably describing the records sought. In order to expedite the request, please provide your contact information including email, phone number and/or mailing address. Email requests are preferred.

The Records Access Officer will respond within 5 business days acknowledging the receipt of the request and include the approximate date for fulfillment of the request or further update will be provided. If clarification of the request is necessary, the RAO will note that in their response.

How to appeal a denied request

  • Requestors may appeal the records request denial within 30 calendar days.
  • The FOIL Appeals Officer will respond within 10 business days of the receipt of the appeal.
