Major Change FAQs

Each particular major has it own unique entrance requirements. In order to ensure that you are taking the correct requirements for your intended major, you should refer to the current SUNY Niagara college catalog and/or talk to your advisor. You can also make an appointment to speak to a counselor in Student Success Center (D-102).

• Make sure that your academic advisor knows your intended plans and preferred major so that s/he can keep you informed of any updates regarding the major change process or your intended program.

Q: Do I need to be enrolled in classes each semester while I’m on the waitlist?
A: Yes. Students must be enrolled in classes each semester (excluding summer and winter sessions) to remain on the waitlist. For specifics about your program, refer to the SUNY Niagara College Catalog.

Q: How often are waitlists reviewed?
A: Waitlists are reviewed at both the beginning and the end of each semester to ensure students maintain continuous enrollment and meet all entrance requirements for their intended major.

Q: Can I submit a major change application without meeting the prerequisites?
A: No. You must meet all prerequisites before submitting a change of major application.

Q: What happens after I meet prerequisites for my desired program?
A: You’ll be placed on a program-specific waitlist. To stay on the list, you must continue meeting those prerequisite standards. The Student Success Center will use this list to place students into the program as seats become available.

Q: Will I be notified if major change requirements or procedures change after I apply?
A: Yes. If program requirements or the major change process are updated after your application is submitted, the Student Success Center will contact you. Please make sure your contact information in BANNER is up to date.

Q: How do I officially change my major?
A: Students must:

1. Contact the Student Success Center in D‑102 (716‑614‑6290).
2. Complete the Change of Major Application (except for LPN/RN programs).
3. Submit the application via Banner Web under: Student Services & Financial Aid → Student Records → Major Change Application.

Q: What’s the difference between admission requirements and major change requirements?
A:

• Admissions requirements apply to new students entering SUNY Niagara.
• Major change requirements apply to current students who want to switch their major. Both include prerequisite coursework specific to the major.
