The typical work schedule for this role is focused on weekday evenings and weekend daytime hours, usually spanning from Tuesday to Saturday but could vary based on departmental need. Position may be required to be on call when not on regular schedule based on departmental needs.

Position Summary: The work involves acting as a group more of the less complex aspects of an organized recreation program. The particular program or programs and only secondarily for direct supervision of activities. The work is performed under the general supervision of a recreation employee of a high rank. Does related work as required.

Specifically: Thorough understanding of the Recreation Department to include the planning and delivery of numerous types of recreational activities. Knowledgeable in the methods of group instruction. Ability to motivate and hold the interest of program participants. Ability to render first aid as needed. Take initiative and demonstrate resourcefulness and creative problem-solving.

Typical Work Activities (not limited to):

  • Development and oversight of youth & recreation programming and staff allocated to those programs.
  • Conducts one or more group recreation activities of a general or social nature such as ball playing, dancing, singing or routine arts and crafts.
  • Facility scheduling and management and agreements.
  • Assist with administrative tasks and duties related to the activities, programs, and services provided by the Recreation Department, including but not limited to, answering the telephone and emails, processing payments for programs, processing registration forms, creating program documents, creating memos and spreadsheets.
  • Assist with staff scheduled for the Recreation office.
  • Oversee time and attendance for Recreation staff.
  • Build out of programs, events and manage facilities in the Recreation software system.
  • Create promotional materials (print and online) for programs events.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports on activity; may render first aid and assist with the instruction in other areas.
  • Plan, oversee programs and events.
  • Assist with staff recruitment, retention, onboarding, training and oversight.
  • Knowledge of all policy and procedures related to Recreation Department programs and systems.
  • Staff training on policy and procedures related to Recreation Department programs and systems.
  • Manage and oversee the scheduling of staff to ensure coverage of youth and recreation programs and events.
  • Create/form partnerships/relationships with local youth organizations, schools, etc.
  • Assist with departmental funding requests and reporting paperwork.
  • Manage purchases and tasks associated therewith.
  • Schedule and oversee social media and website postings.
  • Other departmental tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Must be over the age of 18.
  • Must possess valid First Aid, BLS/CPR Certifications. If hired the applicant will have 30 days to obtain these certifications. Certifications must be from the department approved list.
  • Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor certification must be obtained by time of permanent appointment or within 6 months of initial appointment (whichever is sooner).
  • Applicant must be able to perform the physical activities, physical demands and work within the environmental conditions of the position.
  • Must have a valid NYS Driver License and reliable transportation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Preference will be given to applicants studying or holding a Bachelor of Science degree, with a concentration in Education, Recreation and/or Physical Education preferred.
  • This is a provisional hire under Civil Service guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

A) Completion of two (2) years of study at a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) or four (4) year college or university specializing in physical education, recreation or related field and one (1) year of experience in conducting organized creational activities; or:

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in conducting organized recreational activities; or:

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Note: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

If an in-person interview is extended, applicant will be asked to:

  • Be prepared to present a 10-minute program session plan (lesson plan) for the age group of your choosing.
  • Be prepared to present an overview of one Community Event plan.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.13 per hour
